Paper Mache

Papier Macheis among the most renowned crafts of Kashmir. The art was born in Persia, and brought to Kashmir in the 15th century. This Persian art was favored greatly by mogul emperors that came from Samarkand, Uzbekistan in Central Asia iaround that time, and ruled India for nearly 200-300 years. This unique craft involves the use of paper pulp for creating beautiful artifacts painted by expert craftsmen in lifelike images of maple leaves and other motifs.
